Nickel & Dimed

People don't stop to pick up coins during a down pour. In the strong rains that have continued of late, we've swooped down and collected $1.12. And a cat whom we've named Nova. When he blinks we see cent signs in his eyes.

Total haul for the last ten days = $1.12 and a cat with orange eyes.

TOTAL to date $27.51

Finally!

I've been in Harlem for a month and finally found my first quarter. I also found three pennies on our first walk with the Idiot to Morningside Park (pictured here).

My favorite quote that I've heard in Harlem fits in with today's find. Last night, walking home from Central Park, we passed a guy standing up from a stoop and walking away from his friends and he said, "I think I'll go and try and get a cigarette; I have a quarter." Man, that's a cheap loosey.

Pennies in the Flowers

I found three pennies over the weekend, all next to flowers; one by a flower stall and two next to flower beds. I wish I could plant them and come back in about six months and pick $100 bills off little copper plants.

I also found a quarter - maybe I should plant it first.

Uno

Another Filthy penny found between paving stones in Union Square Park.

Is anyone else experiencing spring as a fraud? Like we don't really deserve the tulips this year?

UPDATE: Found a quarter in the park during late night dog walk.

A 31 Cent Day

Another penny found, one block from my door, first thing in the morning. This is not an image of an NYC sidewalk in January. It's in front of some school somewhere in summer and it's a refreshing contrast to our salt-caked streets and sidewalks. I am sick of winter.

In the Prince Street subway station (downtown) I found a penny coming out of the turnstile, and then saw another penny, and next to that - a quarter. Nice.

Walking East on 14th Street I picked up another three pennies over the course of several blocks. Warm weather makes a difference.

I found *another* quarter. This one was on the ground near the Union Square Holiday Market. I wish people would start dropping singles, fives, tens, and twenties.

On 13th Street near University I found one very dirty penny and then two pennies hanging out near a box of fresh fish out behind the back of Whole Foods. And then, under a locked bike, a quarter. I love it when that happens.

1+1+10+25

I found two pennies and, in front of a swanky hotel on the Bowery (times sure have changed), a dime. That's another twelve cents for my fortune.

UPDATE - late night dog walk led us to a QUARTER in the street near the cinema at 13th and Broadway. Paving crews have been digging up 13th Street for two nights now getting it ready for a new coat of blacktop. Apparently one of them lost a quarter in the line of duty. I saw it glinting in the red neon and it's mine now.

Total haul today = .37

TOTAL to date = $12.48

Just needed a nickel and we could've gone the cycle.

Another Dos Centavos, Again!

Pennies are hanging out in crosswalks these days. I found another one in the crosswalk over 4th Avenue at 13th Street. I also found one on the sidewalk of Prince near Broadway.

And a fat quarter on the floor of a cab - that find made my day!

1/4

A quarter in Union Square during the evening rush hour. Sitting on the paving stones near enough to some guy's feet for me to wonder if it was his, but not near enough for him to try and claim it! I suppose I could have asked him it it was his but I'm a collector!

Ka-ching.

9:51 a.m. Grand Central Station Zaro's, a dime on the floor in front of the glass case of pastries.

3:47 p.m. Grand Central Station platform of Track 29, a quarter hiding among all the silver bolts holding down the rubber safety yellow at the edge of the platform.

5:17 Broadway just north of 17th Street on the east side in front of GoodBurger, a penny.

5:18 Union Square North at Broadway, ANOTHER dime near that "Gentleman Grafter" Joe Ades who sells vegetable peelers and who has appeared in Vanity Fair. He saw me bend down and get the dime and I know he wanted it but it was way too far from him to claim. It was practically in 17th Street.

Total bank-breaking haul for the day = 46 cents

TOTAL to date = $2.36

Hot Damn and then some!

Finally, a quarter. 25 whole cents. I've needed this. It's been nothing or solo pennies for too long. I was just saying to myself yesterday while walking home from work, "I really need to find a quarter." Bonzai! This morning I found a quarter on the uptown platform of the 6 train's Spring Street Station.

It's about time.

Then, after the evening commute, I found three pennies near the turnstiles at the 14th Street subway station entrance near Circuit City. And a dime - get this - in the doorway of the train. I mean it was on the plate where the actual doors slide open and closed. When the doors were closed the dime rode on the *outside* of the car, until I plucked that is.

Total haul for the day = .38 (about 1/4 of the total to date!)

TOTAL to date = $1.58

Yow.
